The Town of Chilhowie, Virginia is seeking a qualified, energetic and professional candidate to serve as Chief of Police. The Town of Chilhowie was incorporated in 1913 with a population of just under 2,000. The Town lies on and over the Interstate - 81 corridor in western Smyth County and borders Washington County. The Department employs five other officers, providing 24/7 coverage, including an Assistant Chief (currently servicing as Acting Chief), a Sergeant and three Police Officers I and II, as described in the Town's pay classification plan. The department is fully equipped with modern vehicles and equipment.
Under the appointment of the Mayor and Town Council by Charter, with direct supervision from the Town Manager as with all department heads, the successful applicant will provide executive leadership and management of the Police Department. The Chief will provide leadership and innovative community based policing to the operation of the department. The Chief will accountable for the general welfare and safety of the public within the operational constraints, laws, policies, and regulations of public safety programs, while operating under existing budgetary requirements. Significant interaction with the community and public contact is required. The previous Chief served 13 years.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, public safety, public administration or related field, plus at least five years in police supervision or related public safety supervision is required. The candidate must be currently certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services or be able to obtain such within twelve months of employments. These positions are full-time and will work a 24-hour shift (56-hour work week). Salary range is DOQ with full Town of Chilhowie benefits.
