Douglas E. Crabtree is being remembered for his service in the Harrison County fire and emergency medical services after his death, which was caused by injuries suffered when a tree fell on his vehicle at his Tippecanoe home Wednesday night.
Crabtree, 50, served as president of the Harrison County EMS Association and assistant chief of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was employed for 34 years by the Harrison County Engineer’s Office.
“He was like my brother. I’m losing my right hand,” said Rob Laporte, chief of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department. “I’m just going to miss him like crazy. It’s going to be a big pair of boots to fill.”
In addition to his work with emergency services, Crabtree also served as secretary of the Freeport Sportsmen’s Club. Laporte said he was involved in hunters’ education and organized the annual youth fishing derby.
“He went above and beyond,” Laporte said.
